Chiropractic Care Is the Ultimate Headache Treatment: Here's Why

Written By Harrison Chiropractic and Wellness on October 11, 2018

You know when that time of day rolls around where you simply can’t concentrate on what you’re doing for one more second? You struggle to suppress that nagging, dull pain forcing its way into your temples and forehead or even behind your eyes.

Simply put, headaches and migraines are the worst. Up to one out of 20 adults suffer from headaches, daily.

This common nuisance is often treated by the quick fix of popping some over the counter pain reliever or drinking more caffeine. But unfortunately, that doesn’t actually get to the root of the cause for headache treatment.

So, can chiropractors treat headaches? You bet.

What Triggers Headaches?

The American Chiropractic Association states, a majority of primary headaches are associated with muscle tension in the neck. To explain further, a primary headache is categorized as a tension, migraine, or cluster headache, where the headache itself is the primary concern (not an underlying cause).

Other Common triggers include:

  • Certain foods (ex. ones high in monosodium glutamate or MSG)
  • Environmental factors (ex. noises, light, odor)
  • Food allergies (gluten, dairy, etc.)
  • Weather
  • Stress
  • Behaviors (ex. insomnia, exercise)
  • Emotional factors (ex. depression, anxiety)
  • Grinding your teeth
  • Dehydration

The Different Types of Headaches

As mentioned, headaches can be separated into different categories. Here’s a little about each one:

Cluster Headache: These painful headaches occur on one side of the head and come in cycles.

Tension Headache: Sufferers experience dull pain, tightness, or pressure around the forehead or the back of the head and neck.

Migraine: Tension headaches often occur before a migraine. As Healthline explains, these range from intense to severe, and often come with other symptoms like nausea, auras, dizziness, and other neurological problems.

The good news in all this? There is an end in sight, keep reading!

How Is Chiropractic Care an Effective Headache Treatment?

Chiropractic care is a safe, natural headache treatment that can give you long-term results that medication can’t. It’s also proven to be effective. Evidence shows that chiropractic care improves migraines and cervicogenic headaches.

One technique your chiropractor will use is making adjustments to realign your vertebrae and spine. Another technique commonly used is applying massage pressure to alleviate stress and encourage relaxation of the muscles.
